Kia Ora Mate! Spaceships in Australia

Adventure Tours Australia, one of Australia's largest and most innovative tour companies, has signed an exclusive license deal to operate award winning Kiwi innovation 'Spaceships', custom designed vehicles for the adventurous independent traveller, in Australia.

The multimillion-dollar deal will allow Spaceships to grow in Australia and New Zealand at the fastest possible rate utilising all the local knowledge and know-how learned by the award winning Australian company who have been operating for over 15 years.

Spaceships has a license to import 100 vehicles a year into Australia and Adventure Tours will be taking up the whole supply.

The late model low mileage Toyota people movers will be imported directly into Australia from Japan and the interiors will be built in New Zealand and shipped over.

The only significant difference between Australian and New Zealand vehicles will be a larger locally built fridge fitted to the Australian vehicles.

With staff throughout Australia and Europe, and over 100,000 customers a year on its guided bus and four wheel drive-based adventure products 'Adventure Tours' is ideally placed to help distribute Spaceships Australia and New Zealand globally.

"We have so many synergies with Adventure Tours, from target customer demographic to product range with adventure focused tours, and their 'Oz Experience' backpacker bus network."

"The business couldn't be more complimentary to that of Spaceships New Zealand and its sister company Stray and its backpacker bus network, making them the best possible partner for the strong future growth of both companies," says Neil Geddes, Managing Director of Stray and Spaceships New Zealand.

Adventure Tours Marketing Director, Greg Zammit, said "The success of Spaceships in New Zealand is remarkable. We are really excited about the opportunity of Spaceships in Australia - particularly our ability to work from different gateways with Adventure Tours' existing network of depots and operational bases, and the potential of combined distribution and marketing throughout Australia and New Zealand."

Spaceships are currently landing in Australia at the rate of ten per month and hires will start in January 08.

The Kiwi concept, Spaceships, has been a great success from its launch in October 2004. The uniquely designed vehicles created a new category in the New Zealand travel transport market, winning a NZ tourism award for innovation in 2006 and gaining Qualmark accreditation (the New Zealand government's official quality endorsement) in 2007.

Spaceships are a compact small vehicle that's like a car to drive with all the essential travel equipment, designed for travellers who like to venture off the beaten track.

Awards Recognise Tourisms Best

Excellence in air and road transport operators has been recognised in the Tourism Industry Awards 2006.

Innovation recognition

Spaceships says its win is recognition that it is an innovative niche product which appeals to the mainstream travel market.

Spaceships are custom fitted Toyota people movers with travelling equipment such as oven, fridge, double bed and DVD player with en route planning. The versatility of Spaceships makes them appealing to travellers, and the business is constantly looking for ways to exceed customer expectations and modify the product to cater for more niche markets.

The approach utilised by the company for premarket research was extensive and resulted in the concept of a ‘Space Traveller’ for a niche backpacker market, which the judges said gives the company a unique selling point which would be very hard to replicate.

The judges said both their launch and implementation of their bright orange brand have been hugely innovative, as is the Space Station concept which provides a local contact place for people renting the vehicles.

By this summer there’ll be 200 Spaceships on New Zealand roads.

Spaceships Popularity Soars

New Zealand concept and creation, Spaceships, celebrated its first birthday with the launch of its 130th vehicle. The custom fitted, Toyota ‘people movers’ feature quality, essential travelling equipment including a cooker, a chiller, full size double bed, water supply and a stereo with DVD player (with route planning DVD and movies). The vehicles cost from $100 per day in peak season to hire which includes unlimited kilometres and 24 hour roadside assistances.

Spaceships have been a runaway success, says Neil Geddes, Managing Director and creator of Spaceships. “We underestimated how big the market would be for people looking for a vehicle which is easy to drive and is positioned in between a car and a campervan. “The Spaceships concept, which is basically a bed and breakfast on wheels, has proven to be a winning formula. The size of the vehicles makes them easy to manoeuvre on the New Zealand rural back-roads as well as in built-up cities, while all the essential travelling equipment, that is a bed, cooker, chiller, water, route planner etc, is in the back seat, which ensures travellers have a hassle free adventure,” said Geddes.

A number of new initiatives are planned for Spaceships’ second year, including increasing the fleet. “We continue to modify, improve and tailor our Spaceships to our varying customer needs. They can choose to have roof racks, 4 wheel drive, a side canopy and so on. This flexibility has added to the appeal and popularity of Spaceships,” added Geddes.

To celebrate Spaceships’ first birthday, the Company took 24 travel agents in a convoy of 15 bright orange vehicles to Tawharanui Regional Park, an Auckland Regional Council (ARC) regional park on the beach 80 minutes north of Auckland for the night. www.spaceships.tv
