Explore Christchurch and its surroundings
As the largest city of the South Island, Christchurch has heaps to offer. Although the city has changed as a result of the 2010-2011 earthquakes (info) it still has loads to offer.
One of the first new initiatives in the city was Re:START Mall, a pop-up mall made out of shipping containers. It was only meant as a temporary shopping solution, but due to its popularity, it’s still open today. At Re:START Mall you’ll find an interesting mix of shops, cafes and food truck-like eateries. It’s the perfect place for a yummy lunch or a simple yet tasty dinner.
Being named the Garden City there are many public parks to visit. Park your Spaceship camper nearby and enjoy a walk in the park. Hagley Park and the Christchurch Botanic Gardens are a must-see.
Hagley Park because it’s home to events like the Christchurch Lantern Festival, Cadbury Easter Eggstravaganza and the Wine & Food Festival. The Christchurch Botanic Gardens cover an area of 21 hectares. To name a few things to do and see:
- Central Rose Garden with over 250 varieties of roses
- The Fernery with a collection of typical New Zealand ferns
- The Water Garden with lilies and irises
Banks Peninsula (Akaroa), an easy drive from Christchurch
Are you ready to hit the road after exploring Christchurch? Then Banks Peninsula is a beautiful place for the next stop on your self-drive tour of the South Island. This peninsula of volcanic origin covers an area of approximately 1,150 square kilometres.
Akaroa is a small but beautiful harbour town on Banks Peninsula. The town’s Māori name is Kāi Tahu, meaning Long Harbour. It’s only a 1-hour drive to Akaroa from Christchurch, which is easy to do for your fuel-efficient Spaceship. Simply follow State Highway 75 for 84 kilometres and you’re there.
In Summer it can get quite busy in Akaroa as it’s a popular resort town for New Zealanders and tourists. But it’s not only humans who love to visit Akaroa. The Akaroa Harbour is often visited by Hector dolphins, making the town a perfect place for a swim-with-the-dolphins boat tour.
For Spaceships campervan hire Akaroa is also a very special place as we have an ongoing planting initiative with over 48,000 trees and plants being planted over the past years.
