Spaceships conservation project: Children’s Bay Park
Spaceships started in New Zealand in 2004 by creating a new vehicle category in the rental market and then successfully exported this innovation to Australia and the UK. From our humble beginnings of two vehicles, we now operate over 1000 vehicles across New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, the UK and Europe.
Reducing the impact on the environment
We are always evolving the way we operate to help reduce our impact on the environment. As our global operations were born here in New Zealand we felt it appropriate to work together as a group on a special project here in New Zealand called Children’s Bay Park.
Conservation project Children's Bay Park
Children’s Bay Park is a 200 Hectare peninsula of land located in Akaroa Harbour just 80 minutes from Christchurch. It is a beautiful piece of land surrounded by two harbours. Approximately 100 Hectares is in native bush. The other half of the land is an operating farm running a small high-quality herd of Angus cattle that graze the grass faces and ridges.
Spaceships has been involved for many years now helping to replant areas of the property, re-fence the gullies so the native plants can grow, create wetlands to help filter any stock runoff and provide habitat for local birdlife, pest trapping and more recently public walking tracks.
Replanting native plants
Over the last 10 years, over 25,000 plants have been planted. These plants include flaxes, Totora, Redwoods, Nikau palms, Kanuka, Manuka, and various grasses. All this planting along with the pest trapping has helped the native bird population make a great recovery.
Multiple new fence lines have been installed and several ponds and wetlands created with many more to come. More recently we created a walking trail that links the township of Takamatua to Akaroa. This has now become a popular short walk with spectacular views of the harbours on both sides.

The Children’s Bay Walk or ‘The Rhino Walk’ (named after the life-size sculpture of a Rhino at the top of the hill) has become a popular free walk for locals and visitors and we encourage all our Space Travellers to drive over to Akaroa and walk the track. Keep your eyes open for a family of giraffe also!
Spend the night at the campsite
Akaroa is a highlight in the Canterbury region and a great place to spend a night or two. There are a great TOP 10 campsite and plenty of other accommodation options, beautiful restaurants, quaint seaside town with a relaxed vibe, plus a world-class trip to go swim with the worlds smallest dolphins, which is rated as one of the best experiences in New Zealand.
Thank you, Space Travellers
We thank all our customers as your support helps us to continue to reinvest into Children’s Bay Park and enables us to continue to plant, maintain walking tracks and trap pests. We hope you enjoy these recently taken images of the Park and that some of you make it over to Akaroa and go and immerse yourselves in the Park. Happy travels
